"CELEBRATION OF YOUTH" FIESTAS

OBJECTIVE:

To give the youth in rural Honduras an opportunity to celebrate through a village party.

WHY ARE WE PURSUING THIS PROJECT?

Due to the extreme levels of poverty, the majority of the youth in rural Honduras rarely receive a gift - whether for their birthday, Christmas, or other occasion. Additionally, most, from a very young age, know a difficult life of work in the fields alongside their families. These village parties offer the opportunity for the youth to smile, laugh, play, receive gifts, and be kids for a moment. Light of Esperanza also uses these parties to meet the youth from each village to discuss scholarship opportunities, as well as other possible future projects.

PROJECTED TIMELINE:

This project began in June 2012 and is ongoing.

THE END RESULT:

Light of Esperanza currently holds these annual parties in 10 villages for over 1000 children. Each year we hope to increase the number of villages and youth that we are able to bring this day of celebration to.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:

To make this project operational, it will cost $1,000.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR STUDENTS:

OBJECTIVE:

To provide sufficient school supplies and textbooks for the 125 students in the village schools.

WHY ARE WE PURSUING THIS PROJECT?

Students who have a genuine desire to pursue their educational careers are greatly limited by the lack of supplies and textbooks.

PROJECTED TIMELINE:

This project will begin and end when sponsorship is fulfilled.

THE END RESULT:

This project will give students a fair opportunity to demonstrate their intelligence and capability. We will provide pencils, pens, crayons, notebooks, and textbooks for students in the village schools.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:

To make this project operational, it will cost $500.

MOTHER TO MOTHER INITIATIVE:

OBJECTIVE:

To provide support to pregnant women in Honduras before, during, and after birth.

WHY ARE WE PURSUING THIS PROJECT?

The vast majority of women in rural Honduras are too impoverished to purchase the important prenatal pills such as folic acid and iron pills, and receive little support from their government as well. In fact, the majority only receive 1 bottle of prenatal pills for the entire duration of their pregnancy! Our "Mother to Mother" Initiative seeks to find sponsors that care about women's health and understand the importance of providing these resources to women during their pregnancy.

PROJECTED TIMELINE:

This project began in June 2012 and is ongoing.

THE END RESULT:

This project will seek to break the cycle of children being born with disadvantages from the moment of their birth. In providing sufficient resources for pregnant women, they and their children will have a new hope for a fair chance in this world.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:

To make this project operational, it will cost $500

EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS:

OBJECTIVE:

To provide scholarships to promising youth to continue their education past the 6th grade.

WHY ARE WE PURSUING THIS PROJECT?

Free public education in Honduras ends after the 6th grade. The ability to create change in the lives of the impoverished youth in rural Honduras becomes very difficult when the doors of education are closed due to financial limitations. This is especially true for the young girls who have societal pressures to abandon the pursuit of learning for domestic obligations. When given the opportunity to learn through a scholarship, the youth from rural Honduras shine in their schools and create a path towards a promising career and future.

PROJECTED TIMELINE:

This project began in 2012 and is ongoing.

PROJECTED OUTCOME:

Students receiving scholarships to study in the "Colegio" (Grades 7 - 9) will attend the village schools. Students receiving scholarships to study in the "Carrera" school (Grades 10 - 12) will attend school in the town of Santa Rosa de Copan. They will have their enrollment and all necessary supplies paid for through their scholarship. Students will regularly inform Light of Esperanza of their progress through pictures, letters, and their grades.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:

To make this project operational, it will cost $250 to sponsor a youth to study in the "Colegio" school, and $750 to sponsor a youth to study in the "Carerra" high school.

HEALTHY TEETH INITIATIVE:

OBJECTIVE:

To provide toothbrushes, dental floss, and toothpaste to the children of rural Honduras.

WHY ARE WE PURSUING THIS PROJECT?

Dental care is in huge demand. The majority of children have little access to toothbrushes, dental floss and toothpaste. Our objective is to find both in-kind and financial donations to provide these resources to the youth of Honduras.

PROJECTED TIMELINE:

This project began in June 2012 and is ongoing.

THE END RESULT:

This project will give children in Honduras resources for proper dental care, preventing future problems in their dental health.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:

To make this project operational, it will cost $500

FUTURE PROJECTS OF HOPE

Some of the projects planned for the future include:

VILLAGE COMPUTER CENTERS:

OBJECTIVE:

To bring the world of technology to village schools through computer centers.

WHY ARE WE PURSUING THIS PROJECT?

In Honduras, as well as throughout the rest of the world, access to technology is the key that opens new doors of opportunity. The majority of the youth in rural Honduras have never used a computer before. Light of Esperanza seeks to create computer centers in the village schools.

PROJECTED TIMELINE:

This project will begin and end when sponsorship is fulfilled.

THE END RESULT:

With donated computers  and Light of Esperanza's basic computation curriculum, youth will begin to build the technological foundation that will encourage students to pursue further study and professions in the future.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:

To make this project operational, it will require donated computers and laptops that are functional, and $500 for shipping expenses.

WOMEN'S SEWING COOPERATIVE:

OBJECTIVE:

To provide the start-up funds through a no-interest micro-loan for five women to start a successful business making clothes.

WHY ARE WE PURSUING THIS PROJECT?

This cooperative will give an incredible opportunity for five individuals to learn entrepreneurial skills and to begin a successful business, allowing them to not only improve their financial situation, but also to have ownership over their own futures.

There is a great demand for inexpensive clothes - especially school uniforms. Most rural families need to travel to the large towns to buy their clothes and school uniforms. This business will directly distribute high quality clothing to the thousands of people in the surrounding villages.

PROJECTED TIMELINE:

This project will begin when funded and will last for a duration of three years.

PROJECTED OUTCOME:

The five people selected to participate in this cooperative will be sent to a special training school to learn sewing techniques. They will be giving a sewing machine and all of the materials needed to begin their project. They will be responsible for all of the work required for this project, and for ensuring that they have sufficient funds to reinvest in their business to keep it operational during the three year timeframe. After their reinvestment, they will divide the remaining proceeds between themselves, contributing a major source of income for their families.

At the culmination of their three year contract with our organization, the participants will divide the entirety of the invested funds in this cooperative, cashing out, and will have enough capital to be able to start their own business enterprises. At this point, a new group of five young women will take over the cooperative for a new three year contract.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:

To make this project operational, it will cost $1,500.

WOMEN'S BAKERY COOPERATIVE:

OBJECTIVE:

To provide the start-up funds through a no-interest micro-loan for five women to start a successful business making and selling bread products.

WHY ARE WE PURSUING THIS PROJECT?

The typical Honduran breakfast includes baked bread products and coffee. There is a huge demand in this part of Honduras for a business that sells bread products. At this point, residents only have the option of purchasing these products from other villages at highly inflated prices.

There is no question that this cooperative will be very successful for the five women that are selected to participate in it.

PROJECTED TIMELINE:

This project will begin when funded and will last for a duration of three years

THE END RESULT:

The five women selected to participate in this cooperative will be trained in bread making procedures and tutored in successful entrepreneurial skills. They will successfully make and sell bread for a period of three years. They will be responsible for all of the work required for this project, and for ensuring that they have sufficient funds to reinvest in their business to keep it operational during this timeframe.

At this point, a new group of five women will take over the cooperative for a new three year contract.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:

To make this project operational, it will cost $2,000.
