LA HISTORIA DE LIGHT OF ESPERANZA
Light of Esperanza es una organización sin fines de lucro 501(c)3 que trabaja en diez aldeas en el estado de Copan, Honduras, ubicada en una zona rural del occidente del pais, cerca a la frontera de Guatemala. Light of Esperanza ha implementado proyectos en las aldeas de Agua Buena, Limon, El Bosque, Candelaria, Delicias, Joyas Galanas, Bálsamo, Concepcion, Los Naranjos y Vega Redonda. Estas comunidades son algunas de las mas pobres de Honduras, y tambien del hemisferio occidental. Aproximadamente 75% de la población vive en niveles extremos de pobreza.
Nuestro objetivo es trabajar con el pueblo Hondureño para sembrar semillas de nuevos futuros – iluminando con una luz y una nueva fuente de esperanza - con proyectos tangibles que dan el camino para nuevas oportunidades.
HISTORY OF LIGHT OF ESPERANZA
Light of Esperanza is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to help improve the living conditions of the deeply impoverished women and children in rural Honduras.
We currently work in ten different villages within the State of Copan - a mountainous area in rural western Honduras, very close to the border with Guatemala. Light of Esperanza has implemented educational, health, and cooperative business projects in the villages of Agua Buena, Limon, El Bosque, Balsamo, Los Naranjos, Concepcion, Candelaria, Delicias, Joyas Galans and Vega Redonda. These communities are among the most impoverished villages in all of Honduras, as well as within the Western Hemisphere. Approximately 75% of the population live in extreme levels of poverty.
Light of Esperanza works together with the people of Honduras to plant the seeds for new beginnings - shining a light to a new source of hope - through tangible projects that provide the means for new opportunities.
EL PRINCIPIO DE LIGHT OF ESPERANZA
En diciembre de 2009, el proyecto "Light of Esperanza" fue inaugurado con una fiesta para los niños de la aldea de Vega Redonda. La idea de esto vino cuando la directora de Light of Esperanza, Angela Madrid Lara, observó que la mayoría de los jóvenes en el pueblo de su nacimiento nunca habían recibido un regalo en sus vidas - y mucho menos uno para la temporada navideña.
Con un poco de dinero, compramos piñatas, pasteles, refrescos, dulces e innumerables juguetes. La noticia se extendió como pólvora, y antes de lo esperado, teníamos más de 100 niños - llenos de ilusiones y risas, celebrando la fiesta.
Aunque sabíamos que la felicidad era momentánea en esta situación, valió la pena el esfuerzo, pero nos dimos cuenta que no duraría tanto tiempo. Como resultado, después de conversaciones con algunas de las madres de los niños, nació el primer proyecto de nuestra organización, la cooperativa de peces formada por un grupo de 5 mujeres. La idea es que este proyecto continúe para generar ingresos y esperanza para las mujeres, sus familias y para el pueblo en los años venideros.

HOW LIGHT OF ESPERANZA BEGAN
In December of 2009, project "Light of Esperanza" was inaugurated with a holiday party for the children of the village of Vega Redonda, Copan. The idea for this came when Light of Esperanza Founder and Director, Angela Madrid Lara, observed that the vast majority of the youth in this village of her birth had never received a gift in their lives - let alone one for the holiday season.
With a little money, we purchased piñatas, cakes, soda, candy, and countless toys for the children, and put on a "fiesta" for the youth. Word spread like wildfire, and before we knew it, well over 100 children - full of smiles and laughter, were celebrating the holidays and the act of giving.
While we knew that the momentary happiness of this party was well worth the effort, we also realized that it would only last for so long. As a result, after discussions with some of the mothers of the children, the first project of Light of Esperanza, the Women's Fish Cooperative business, was created. The idea being that this project will continue to generate income and hope for the women, their families, and for the village for years to come.
Seven years later, Light of Esperanza has greatly expanded its ability to affect change in the lives of the women and children it works with. Now working with thousands of people in ten different villages, Light of Esperanza engages projects that create real and lasting change for the impoverished women and children of rural Honduras.
¿Por qué enfocar en la zona rural de Honduras?
Honduras es el tercer país más pobre en el hemisferio occidental. Se estima que aproximadamente el 75% de la población rural, como las personas de las aldeas con quien trabajamos, viven en extremos niveles de pobreza, y faltan las necesidades básicas para mantener a sus familias.
La fundadora y directora de Light of Esperanza, Angela Madrid Lara, nació en Vega Redonda. Con esto, ella conoce la realidad de como vive la gente y las necesidades que tienen, y qué tipos de proyectos serán más exitosos.
Light of Esperanza empezó a trabajar con la aldea de Vega Redonda en 2010. En 2013, Light of Esperanza se expandió a trabajar con las dos aldeas vecinas, Agua Buena y Limon. En 2014 Light of Esperanza se expandió a trabajar con las aldeas vecinas de Delicias, Candelaria, El Bosque y Joyas Galanas. En 2015, Light of Esperanza expandió a trabajar con las aldeas de Bálsamo, Los Naranjos y Concepcion.

Why rural Honduras?
Honduras is the third poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It is estimated that approximately 75% of the rural population, like the people of the villages we work with, live in extreme levels of poverty, lacking the basic necessities to support themselves and their families.
The Founder and Director of Light of Esperanza, Angela Madrid Lara, was born in the village of Vega Redonda. Because of this, and because of the connections that she has with the community, she is able to understand the needs of the people, and what types of projects will be most successful there, as well as in the neighboring villages.
Beginning in 2010, Light of Esperanza started working in the the village of Vega Redonda. In 2013, Light of Esperanza expanded its services to the two neighboring villages, Agua Buena and Limon. In 2014, Light of Esperanza further extended its impact on working with the rural communities of Honduras by beginning projects in the neighboring villages of El Bosque, Joyas Galanas, Candelaria and Delicias. In 2015, Light of Esperanza expanded to work with the villages of Balsamo, Los Naranjos and Concepcion.
With continued support, Light of Esperanza expects to reach additional villages
in rural western Honduras.
